Those who disagree with us may be stupid, wicked, or insane, but saying so does not make for a good opening statement. Initiating dialog in this manner may even be a mark of our own ignorance, vanity, or neurosis.

Mature Thinking and Science

The last proceeding of reason is to recognise that there is an infinity of things which are beyond it. It is but feeble if it does not see so far as to know this. But if natural things are beyond it, what will be said of supernatural?
-- Pensées 267

Can Believers Argue with Unbelief?

Those who do not love the truth take as a pretext that it is disputed, and that a multitude deny it. And so their error arises only from this, that they do not love either truth or charity. Thus they are without excuse.
-- Pensées 261

Reason or Mystery?

If we submit everything to reason our religion will be left with nothing mysterious or supernatural.

If we offend the principles of reason, our religion will be absurd and ridiculous.
-- Pensées 273

How often do those who assert the one neglect the other? The differences amongst us often rest on divergent intuitions with respect to when a matter should be judged or obeyed—on whether it is an article of faith or reason. Most of us will acknowledge the need to balance or coordinate faith and reason, but we are constantly disagreeing when it comes to particular applications.

Then, we mistakenly assume the other has either no respect for mystery or sacrifices intellect in all things.

Climate Change Policy: Follow the Money

Al Gore is right: the debate is over. Those in power will not entertain a debate on the science of climate change, so the debate is over. It's also over in another respect: the public is weary of it and doesn't know how to reach a conclusion independent of outside authorities. How are any of us really going to know which side has the stronger argument?  As I understand it, climatology is wicked complex and relatively new as a science. I doubt I would know the right answer if it was right under my nose.

We Moved!

I don't understand our capacity for suppressing the memory of pain and agony. I'm pretty sure I said the last time we moved that we would hire professional movers the next time we moved, but of course, we didn't. We had four wonderful friends help us move all of three and half miles from our old house into a rental inside the perimeter of Atlanta and is was still more that my mind, soul, and body could bear.
